Mountain Climbing
7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route Climb
Overview
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular climb for good reason — it offers the best balance of summit success rate (around 85% on the 7-day version), scenic variety (rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, glaciers), and acclimatization profile. Often called the "Whiskey Route" because it is harder than the original Marangu ("Coca-Cola") Route but rewards with better views and a higher success rate.
Our climbs include certified mountain guides, assistant guides, a cook and a porter team (typically 3-4 porters per climber), full-board mountain meals prepared fresh in camp, quality 4-season tents and sleeping mats, twice-daily health checks with a pulse oximeter, portable oxygen and an emergency first-aid kit. Two nights pre/post-climb hotel in Moshi or Arusha included. Climbers should be in good physical condition and have done some hill walking with elevation in the months before — but no previous high-altitude experience is required.

Day-by-day itinerary

Machame Gate → Machame Camp (3,010m)
Machame Gate → Machame Camp
Pre-dawn breakfast at your Moshi hotel, then transfer one hour to the Machame Gate (1,800m). Park registration, briefing, and porter equipment-check. Begin trekking around 11am through dense montane rainforest — moss-draped trees, colobus monkey calls, the chatter of turacos, the smell of wet leaves and ginger. Five to seven hours of steady upward walking on a well-graded trail, with a packed lunch on a fallen tree. Arrive at Machame Camp (3,010m) in late afternoon. Dinner in the mess tent — soup, hot main, hot drinks. Briefing on tomorrow. First night under canvas at altitude.
Meals: L, D · Stay: Machame Camp (3,010m, tented)

Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,840m)
Machame → Shira
Breakfast in camp, then a steady five-hour climb up onto the Shira Plateau, leaving the rainforest behind for heath and moorland — giant lobelia, senecio trees, and your first views of Kibo's snow-capped summit ahead and Mount Meru behind. Picnic lunch en route. Arrive at Shira Camp (3,840m) by mid-afternoon. Acclimatization walk in the late afternoon — climb a little higher, sleep a little lower, the cardinal rule. Dinner in the mess tent and an early night.

Shira → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Shira → Barranco
A long acclimatization day. Climb steadily to the Lava Tower (4,640m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m) — climb high, sleep low. Today is when most trekkers feel the first touch of altitude; your guide monitors with the pulse oximeter. The afternoon arrival at Barranco gives spectacular views of the Western Breach and the soaring Barranco Wall, your task for tomorrow morning.
Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Barranco Camp (3,960m, tented)

Barranco Wall → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Barranco → Barafu
Tackle the Barranco Wall after breakfast — a scrambly but non-technical climb that takes about two hours and rewards with the best views of the trip. Continue across the Karanga Valley, lunch at Karanga Camp (4,035m), then a steady afternoon climb to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the summit assault camp. Early dinner around 5pm and into bed by 7pm — you will be woken at 11pm for the summit push.
Meals: B, L, D · Stay: Barafu Camp (4,640m, tented)

Summit Day → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka
The summit attempt. 11pm wake-up, hot tea and biscuits, then begin the climb at midnight under a sky thick with stars. The route ascends scree slopes for six hours to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, where the sun rises over Mawenzi to the east. A final 45 minutes along the rim brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the rooftop of Africa, summit photos, hugs and tears. Begin the long descent: back to Barafu for breakfast and a few hours' sleep, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for dinner and a hard-earned final night on the mountain.
