Kenya · Departing Kisumu

Safaris departing Kisumu — the western gateway to the Mara.

Most Kenya safaris depart Nairobi, but for travelers based in or near Kisumu — and for international visitors flying into Kisumu International Airport for a regional conference, an onward trip to Uganda or Rwanda, or a western Kenya cultural tour — these itineraries offer the Mara experience without the Nairobi backtrack. The drive from Kisumu to the Maasai Mara is significantly shorter than from Nairobi (about 5 hours versus 7-8), and the route enters the reserve via the Oloololo Gate into the Mara Triangle — the wildlife-rich, less-visited western third of the reserve. The 3-day quick safari delivers two full Mara game drives in the briefest possible window; the 5-day extended itinerary adds Lake Victoria and the rarely-visited Ruma National Park (Kenya's only sanctuary for the rare roan antelope). Both itineraries use the same private 4x4 Land Cruisers and KPSGA-certified guides as our Nairobi-departure trips, with mid-range lodge accommodation and full board throughout.
