7 Days Kenya Coast Cultural Tour — Mombasa, Malindi & Lamu
Overview
The Swahili coast is one of Africa's most underrated cultural destinations — a thousand-year-old trading civilization built on dhows, coral stone, ivory and spice, with UNESCO-listed towns, ruined cities, and some of the warmest people on the continent. This 7-day cultural beach holiday traces the coast from Mombasa to Lamu, balancing serious cultural exploration with proper beach time at the Indian Ocean.
You start in Mombasa with a full guided day in the Old Town — Fort Jesus (UNESCO-listed), the Swahili doors, the spice market and the dhow harbour. Then north to Watamu and the haunting 13th-century Gede Ruins, with snorkeling at Watamu Marine Park. The trip culminates in two days on Lamu Island — UNESCO-listed Swahili town with no cars (only donkeys and dhows), a labyrinth of coral-stone alleys, and some of the finest carved doors in the Swahili world.
This is a slow, cultured, contemplative trip — perfect for honeymooners, second-time East Africa travelers, and anyone who wants more from the Kenyan coast than just sun and sand.

Diani Beach — Mombasa Old Town day tour
Mombasa Old Town
A full guided day in Mombasa Old Town. Start with Fort Jesus, the imposing 16th-century Portuguese fortress that anchors the harbour — its UNESCO-listed walls tell a 400-year story of conquest, slavery, trade and resistance. Wander the narrow alleys of the Old Town with its hand-carved Swahili doors, ornate balconies and Hindu, Muslim, Portuguese and Arab architecture all layered together. Visit the Mandhry Mosque (Kenya's oldest, 1570) and the spice market with its mountains of cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Lunch in a Swahili courtyard restaurant — biryani, samosas, sweet sticky halwa. Afternoon at the dhow harbour and the tusks monument. Return to Diani by sunset, full of Swahili history.

Spend the day on a guided walk through the labyrinth of coral-stone alleys: the 14th-century Riyadha Mosque, the Lamu Fort museum, the donkey sanctuary, and the carved doors that are some of the finest examples of Swahili craftsmanship in the world. A traditional dhow sunset cruise with grilled fish dinner on board, sails dropping as the call to prayer echoes across the water.
