Yes — this itinerary is well suited to families with children aged 6 and up. Game drive days are paced with mid-day breaks at the lodge for swimming and rest, and our guides are experienced at keeping younger travelers engaged. Children under 6 are welcome but we recommend a private vehicle for maximum flexibility.

What is the best time of year to take this safari?

Kenya is a year-round destination, but the dry seasons (June–October and December–March) offer the easiest game viewing as wildlife concentrates around water sources. The great wildebeest migration is typically in the Maasai Mara from July to October. The 'green season' (April–May, November) brings dramatic skies, newborn animals and lower rates.

Can dietary restrictions be accommodated?

Absolutely. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher and allergy-aware menus are standard at our partner lodges. Please flag any restrictions at the time of booking and we will brief the kitchens in advance.

Are the roads sealed and what is the drive like?

Most major routes — Nairobi to Narok, Nairobi to Nakuru, Nairobi to Mombasa — are tarmacked. The final stretch into the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and several other parks is unsealed murram (gravel) road, which can be bumpy. Our 4x4 Land Cruisers handle this comfortably and your guide drives at a sensible pace.

How many people share each safari vehicle?

Our shared safari vehicles seat a maximum of 6 guests so every traveler gets a window seat and direct access to the pop-top roof for photography. Private vehicles are available on request at a supplement — strongly recommended for families and photographers.

Overview

Our most popular budget safari and the most affordable way to see the Maasai Mara without sacrificing the experience. Sleep under canvas at a lively public campsite just outside the reserve, eat fresh meals cooked by a dedicated camp chef, and spend two full days game-driving in the Mara with a KPSGA-certified guide.

This is real safari — the smell of woodsmoke, the call of hyena outside the tent, dawn frost on the grass and a kettle on the fire by 6am. The vehicle is a custom safari minivan or 4x4 with a pop-top roof; the group is small (maximum six guests) so everyone has a window seat. Most travelers on this trip are solo backpackers, couples, and small groups of friends in their twenties and thirties — though plenty of older budget-conscious travelers join too.

You will see the Big Five if luck is on your side, and during migration months (July–October) you have a strong chance of witnessing a Mara River crossing. The cost difference versus a lodge safari is dramatic; the wildlife experience is identical.

Depart Lake Naivasha after breakfast for the five-hour drive south through Narok and Maasai country to the Maasai Mara National Reserve — 1,510 square kilometres of golden savanna pressed against Tanzania's Serengeti. Lunch is served at your safari lodge inside or adjacent to the reserve. By 4pm you are back in the Land Cruiser for your first Mara game drive, when the savanna's prides emerge from rest. Lions sprawl on rock outcrops, cheetahs scan the plains for Thomson's gazelle, and elephant herds crest the horizon in gold dust. From July to October the wildebeest migration thunders across these plains — over 1.5 million animals in the world's last great mammal migration. Dinner around the campfire and overnight at your Mara camp or lodge, the night air rich with the smell of woodsmoke and wild sage.

Maasai Mara — Full day game drives
Maasai Mara National Reserve
Today belongs to the Mara. After early coffee, head out at 6am for the dawn game drive when the big cats are still hunting — the diamond hours when leopards descend from sausage trees and lions finish their kills. You return to the lodge around 10am for a full breakfast and a few hours of leisure: swimming pool, spa treatment, a lazy verandah read or laundry turnaround. After lunch, set out again at 4pm for the golden-hour drive. Between July and October your guide will track radio reports of wildebeest crossings at the Mara River, where Nile crocodiles wait — one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth. An optional sunrise hot-air balloon safari can be arranged at $450 per person, ending with a champagne bush breakfast cooked beside your landing site. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Breakfast and a final short Mara game drive en route out of the reserve — last chances for cheetah cubs, hippo pods and elephant herds at the river. Around 10am you begin the drive back to Nairobi, stopping at a roadside curio market where Maasai women sell beaded jewellery, hand-carved soapstone and wood. A hot lunch is served at a highland restaurant overlooking the Rift Valley before the final stretch through tea-country green to the city. You arrive in Nairobi between 4pm and 5pm. We can drop you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for international flights, transfer you to Wilson Airport for a Mombasa or Zanzibar coastal extension, or back at your Nairobi hotel. End of safari — but very much, we hope, the start of a lifelong love of East Africa.
